Back Yard Bird Feeders & Bird Seed
Not all birds like the same kind of bird feeder or the same type of bird
seed. Often times, bird enthusiasts will place many different feeders
and seed in an effort to attract various species of Florida birds.
Bird feeders of different dimensions will stimulate the way birds feed
in the wild. Here are the four main kinds of bird feeders that you will
find at Tampa's Shells Feed and Garden Supply:

Platform Feeders
Ground-feeding birds will feed off platform feeders that are either
directly on the ground or elevated by several feet.
Perching Feeders
These hanging or pole-mounted feeders feature separate feeding ports
with a 1- to 2-inch perch and will attract a variety of perching
birds. Thistle seed appeals to pine siskins, purple and goldfinches. Try some Black-oil sunflower seed to attract cardinals, chickadees,
and other perching birds.
Suet Holders
Suet cakes are made from ground beef fat, often supplemented with
seeds or berries. Birds will benefit from the great source of energy
it provides. For insect-eating birds, such as woodpeckers, bluebirds
and nuthatches, suet cakes can be hung from
a tree.
Suet is best used in cooler months in Florida as they have a
tendency to spoil.
Nectar
Florida Hummingbirds are one of the most beautiful and amazing types
of birds you can attract to your garden. Feeding on the sweet nectar
of flowers, such as delphinium, cardinal flower, bee balm and
columbine, Hummingbird feeders have a refillable Nectar reservoir
that have a red port or spout that attracts the hummingbird.
Hummingbirds visit Florida March through April.
